Meditation? Why Meditate, What is Meditation?
In my younger days, I used to teach meditation. However, I didn't
teach meditation to just anyone, I specialized in problem cases.
Specifically, those who had taken seminars, read books, and dedicated
quite some time to practice, with dismal results... Dismal being
resulting migraine headaches, depression, and a resulting lack
of will power to continue.
The problem in each and every case was always one thing: Lack
of clarity. Universally, the books and seminars and
other more "new age" oriented teachers generally taught excellent
practice methods, but without teaching ( or having )
a clear understanding of the dynamics involved. This, sadly,
leaves
much
room for failure,
due to ignorance ( lack of knowledge ).
I would start by asking key questions:
What is meditation? Why do you want to meditate? How have you
been trying to meditate?
I would explain that the human experience is entirely powered
by two things: Desire and Desirelessness. This is the ebb and
flow, the yin and yang, of the human spirit in its aspect which
manifests in consciousness as Will.
I would explain that, generally speaking, a human's CONSCIOUS
command of Will is negligable. That, generally, individual's
are entirely run by subconscious dictates, with the human ego
as the "intermediary" between the conscious mind and the power
of the subconscious.
Since desire and desirelessness fuel the human experience, and
the experience we are seeking is meditation, then we need to
understand both desire and desirelessness, and its relationship
to that which our conscious mind desires, as well as that which
our subconscious mind dictates.
Last, I would explain that practically speaking, we have three
levels of mind: The conscious, subconscious, and superconscious.
The superconscious mind is denied expression through us as long
as there is division between the conscious mind and the subconscious
mind. For most of us, in other words, our bodies have far more
power than our conscious will. In more eloquent terms, it's been
stated: "The longest journey is the journey between heart and
mind".
I then would ask each individual to carefully consider each
question asked.
Never have I personally come across an individual with a medidation
problem who could clearly and truely answer the question: What
is Medidation?
I would say that 7 times out of 10, the answer to the question
"Why meditate" involved an individual's desire to find
relief.
The desire to find relief is always fueled directly and physiologically
by
the body itself ( subconscious mind ). This is an excellent
starting motive ( desire ) for meditation. I would say
that 1 out of 10 were motivated by a desire to be a part of a
trend, or
to
be accepted in social or "religious" circles. This is not the
best motive. Last, there was the rare one or two who desired
either
pure spiritual
growth or to utilize meditation to accomplish creative tasks.
Once I knew why an individual desired to meditate, it was
then very easy to help them overcome the blocks they'd been experiencing...
I would explain, always to blank stares, that meditation
is LISTENING. Nothing more, and nothing less. That most individuals
in society do not understand the vast and profound power of opening
up listening space, both for ourselves, and for others, is not
surprising.
I explain that, just as their is a duality with desire and desirelessness,
so is there a duality with meditation: Meditation and Concentration.
Meditation and Concentration form a biolectric circuit in human
consciousness, both mentally and nuerologically. Desire is to
Concentration as Desirelessness is to Meditation. There is a
literal "flow
through"
mechanism
between
concentration and meditation. There will be no meditation without
concentration ( focus of will ), and no prolonged concentration
without meditation.
Therefore, since the body ( subconscious ) most likely has most
of the control of Will, it would be very foolish not to enlist
its cooperation to help with beginning stage of meditation. This
simply involves developing a harmony between
the conscious mind, heart, and body.
To do so, one carefully examines
the motivations of the mind and body ( Why does one want to
listen? ), and then determines:
What does one listen with, and what does one listen to?
Does this all sound like a complicated task? It certainly can
be if one does not have a personal guide to help one through
the maze of concepts and practices.
It can take about 10,000 hours of concentrated meditation to
successfully rewire the human brain from a nuerological standpoint.
Does this
task seem overwhelming? It can be, if one does not integrate
their meditative practices into the practical field of one's
life. In fact, if one does not, then this is not only overwhelming,
it is impossible to do!
Jose Silva's Ultra Mind - Long Relaxation Method
Jose Silva's Ultra Mind Long Relaxation Method is by far the
simplest and most readily accessible method to achieve higher
states of mind and body that I've come across to date. Nothing
else that I've ever seen ( and I have viewed many, many, study
systems ) provides such a simple methodology. It is devoid of
counter-productive, non-experiential ideologies. The system was
independently developed based on practical research, and exists
as an independent exploration into the mind and body.
Most systems
in use today are poor reinterpretations of spiritual texts
regurgitated by authors who themselves have little fundamental
understanding
or experience outside of the "feel good" seminar circles, book
signings, and retreats that the middle class new age movement
dredges through month after
month in search of the next "spiritual high" that, more often
than not, serves as simple escapism.
Don't let the simplicity of the Long Relaxtion Method fool you.
Listen carefully, follow the simple instructions, and success
will rapidly follow, in equal measure to each individual's desire
to employ the methods for the betterment of the collective human
experience.
Don't get me wrong. The Silva Method is not Vipassana, nor is
it Vichara, nor does it compare to sitting in the middle of the
hot desert and chanting for a few months. It's certainly not
likely equal to spending ten or twenty years inside one of the
sacred caves in China with an authentic Qui Gong master.
However, not all of us currently have the dedication or time
to take off for a few months to a North Carolina Vipassana Retreat
Center, and few could tolerate the heat of the blazing desert
day after day in a state of near delirium.
Las Vegas locals can take a Jose Silva Seminar
